This is the new second ford. The engineers built a culvert and thick cement slab. From this point the road grows steeper by the foot. South toward Cap Yong and Chunchon, there were several fords that provided excitement. The truck or jeep would stop at water's edge. The passengers leaped out, grabbed the fording kit--shovels--and tossed wet gravel and dirt into the path of the wheels. The swift current washed the stuff away so we had to work furiously to build up enough of a pad that the wheels gained purchase. At some unpredictable moment, the driver would give a shout, put it in gear, floor it, and we'd have to leap into the truck at the last minute. Someone always got soaked and most of us did the rest of the trip with wet feet.
